CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Drexel men's squash team (14-5) earned a second victory over the Yale on the 2016-17 campaign. This one came on a bigger stage as the Dragons edged the Bulldogs, 5-4, in the consolation finals of the Potter Cup on Saturday evening from Harvard.
Just like when Drexel faced Yale earlier in January, it came down to the final match with sophomore No. 1 Omar El Atmas clinching the team victory.
Drexel turned in wins from five of the top six positions on Saturday to take down the Bulldogs. All five individual victories came against different opponents than the match back in January; Noel Solomon was the only Dragon to face the same Bulldog from his Jan. 27 matchup.
Senior Michael Thompson, sophomore Bransten Ming and El Atmas each had the opportunity to play on Harvard's glass court which was being broadcast live on SQUASHTV.
Thompson and Yale's Kah Wah Cheong were even after two before the Drexel senior came away with the final two games, 11-9, 12-14, 11-4, 11-7.
Ming completed a dramatic comeback as he trailed Spencer Lovejoy of the Bulldogs 2-0 after two. The sophomore came into the match 0-5 on the campaign after falling behind in the first two games but today he came away with the 7-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6 victory.
El Atmas also played in a five-game match. The sophomore took the first and third games while Yale's TJ Dembinski grabbed the second and fourth on the glass court. The fifth went extra as El Atmas won, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9, 9-11, 19-17, to clinch the marathon fifth and the fifth for Drexel as a team.
Freshman Lucas Rousselet swept Liam McClintock from the No. 4 spot, 12-10, 11-8, 11-8, for a big win while junior Atticus Kelly took down Thomas Kingshott from the No. 6 by a final of 7-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6.
The Dragons will now head to the consolation finals in a matchup against No. 4 Rochester at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19. The two previously met on Jan. 20 with Rochester edging the Dragons, 6-3.
