CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 6 Drexel men's squash team (14-6) suffered a 7-2 loss to No. 4 Rochester (13-4) in the Potter Cup Consolation Finals on Sunday afternoon from Cambridge, Mass. to close out the Dragons' participation at nationals. The loss also marked the end of Drexel's team season with only individuals remaining.
Three wins from the bottom of the ladder helped the Yellowjackets secure the consolation victory to close out both teams' participation at nationals.
The Dragons only turned in two victories from the No. 4 and 5 positions but had chances in a few others. Freshman Lucas Rousselet bested Rochester's Tomotaka Endo in a three-game sweep, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8, while junior Luke Willemse defeated Lawrence Kuhn in four games, 11-6, 15-13, 7-11, 12-10. With the individual win, Rousselet revenged a loss from Endo from back on January 20 when the two squads met earlier this season.
Drexel lost three matches against Rochester on Sunday in which the Dragons won the first game but ultimately dropped the match. Additionally, in the No. 3 match, senior Michael Thompson had a 2-1 lead on Rochester's Ricardo Lopez but the Yellowjacket forced a fifth to win the match.
Select Dragons will now prepare for the individual championships from Friday, March 3 through Sunday, March 5 in Hanover, N.H. to close the 2016-17 campaign.
