No. 12 Albany Downs Men's Lacrosse in Home Opener

Philadelphia – The No. 12 Albany Great Danes spoiled Drexel's home opener on Saturday at Vidas Field, 19-8. Connor Fields and J.D. Colarusso had big days for Albany in the win. Fields scored six goals and assisted on four others, while Colarusso made 19 saves in goal as Albany improved to 1-1. Joe Rainoldi had a hat trick for the Dragons, who are now 0-2 on the young season.
Albany scored six straight goals over the final eight minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the third quarter to take control of the game. Bennett Drake started the run as he scooped up a loose ball in front of the net and beat Jimmy Joe Granito. Justin Reh and Sean Eccles scored just :22 apart and with 3:03 to play, Josh Egan set up Reh right on the doorstep, giving Albany the five-goal cushion. Fields scored three times in the first half and Colarusso made nine saves in the first 30 minutes. The teams had been tied after one quarter as Drexel's Chris McLallen scored his first two collegiate goals to start and end the quarter.
The third quarter saw Fields score his fourth and fifth goal of the game within the first five minutes to increase the Danes lead to 11-4. Jeremy Omrod finally stopped the run for Drexel went he high on Colarusso to make it 11-5. Zach Manns picked up the assist on that goal. However, Albany quickly scored two more increasing its lead to eight goals heading into quarter number four. In the final stanza, the teams swapped the first six goals of the quarter as Drexel wasn't able to get it close the rest of the way. Adam Osika scored two fourth quarter goals for Albany. Fields was the distributor in the fourth as he set up three teammates for goals. Will Manganiello, Rainoldi and Wade Shervin had goals for the Dragons. It was the first career goal for Shervin.
Justin Reh finished the day with a hat trick for the Danes. Sean Eccles and Osika each finished with a pair of scores and an assist. Albany outshot the Dragons, 50-44. The Great Danes dominated on draws, winning 21 of the 31 face-offs. T.D. Ierlan won 19 of them and had a game-high 12 ground balls. Granito made 10 saves in a losing cause for the Dragons, who have a short turnaround until they take the field again. Drexel will host Villanova on Tuesday at Vidas Field. Face-off is at 5 p.m.
