SAN FRANCISCO – The Drexel women's tennis team opened its spring break trip in California Tuesday with a tough 4-3 loss to the San Francisco Dons at the Olympic Club. The men's team also fell in a 4-1 loss.
The women's team falls to 13-4 (1-0 CAA), while San Francisco's women's team improves to 3-11 (0-2 WCC). The Dragons' men fell to 10-5 (0-0 CAA) on the year, while the Dons improve to 6-11 (1-3 WCC).
On the women's side, the Dragons jumped out strong, winning the doubles point. Ghita Benhadi and Kendra Bunch delivered the first blow with a 6-2 win at No. 2, before Lea Winkler and reigning CAA Performer of the Week Honami Yazawa put the point away in the third spot, 6-2. In singles, though, the Dragons could only muster victories from the fifth and sixth spots. Clary Rodriguez Cruz cruised past Jaiyu Mu at No. 5, 6-0, 6-4, while Ryshena Providence earned a 6-0, 7-6 (5) victory over Alisha Sharma in the sixth. The win was the 40th of Providence's career.
Drexel's men came out of the gates strong, taking the doubles point from the Dons. Balaji Lakshmanan and Alex Zenonos teamed up to get the Dragons on the board first with a 6-3 win from the third position, before Hamza Laalej and Youssef Lahlou combined to put away the point with a 7-6 (3) tiebreak win in the second. The momentum, however, would not carry over into singles play, and the Dragons dropped four matches to cede the overall match. While they would force three three-set matches, two went unfinished and they dropped the other.
Tennis' trip continues Wednesday when the women's team takes on Santa Clara at 4 p.m. (EST).
