Delaware Takes Two from Softball in Sunday Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team lost two games to Delaware on Sunday to close out their first home conference weekend of the season. The Dragons fell to the Blue Hens, 11-3 in game one and then went on to lose by an 8-0 deficit after five innings in the second game of the day.
The Dragons were the first to strike in game one, getting on the board in the bottom of the first as Vanessa Lightfoot tagged up from third on a deep foul out up the right field line from Taylor Lee and then Linda Rush crossed the plate off an RBI single from Kai Uyesaka in the next at-bat. Delaware got a run back in the top of the second, but then the Dragons tacked on another run as Jourdan Skirha hit a two-out double and then scored on an RBI single from Jenelle Ladrido in the bottom half of the inning.
Drexel led Delaware, 3-1 until the top of the fourth when the Blue Hens posted four runs off of three hits. Highlighting the Blue Hens' scoring effort was a three-run home run from Devon Stiner. This gave Delaware a 5-3 advantage through four innings.
The Blue Hens would add on a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and then three in the seventh while holding off the Dragons' offense, which helped them to win the first game of the day by an 11-3 margin.
The Blue Hens outhit the Dragons, 12-7 in the first outing of the day. Delaware's Jordan Cargile picked up her 10th win of the season and what would go on to be her first win of the day. Tara Konopka was credited with the loss for the Dragons after three and a third innings pitched.
Delaware got on the board early in game two, scoring one run in the first and two in the second and then consistently built up their advantage inning by inning as the game progressed. In the top of the third, the Blue Hens took a 4-0 lead off a solo home run from Anna Steinmetz and then in the fourth they scored three runs off of four hits to go up, 7-0. In the top of the fifth, Delaware added the last run it needed for the run rule to be put in place a half inning later as Devon Stiner singled in Delaware's eighth run of the game. The Dragons were unable to overcome the deficit Delaware had created and would ultimately fall, 8-0 after five innings of play.
The Blue Hens outhit the Dragons, 14-6 in the second game of the day. Delaware's Cargile picked up her second win of the day and her 11th of the season, while Devon Grippe was credited with the loss for Drexel.
With the losses the Dragons move to 9-12 overall and 1-5 against conference opponents, while the Blue Hens improve to 14-14, 4-2 CAA.
The Dragons will return to action on Tuesday, April 4 as they visit Delaware State for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
