AMHERST, Mass. - UMass scored eight straight goals to erase a one goal deficit and went on to defeat Drexel 14-8. The Dragons ended the regular season with a 3-2 mark in CAA play. Marshal King and Jake O'Donnell each had three points for Drexel.
Drexel (6-7) got off to a good start, scoring three of the first four goals in the game to take the lead. Jake O'Donnell, who has been very productive as of late, scored the first goal for Drexel and set up the next by Reid Bowering, sandwiched between a UMass score. Drexel's lead went to 3-1 when Robert Frazee converted a feed from Will Manganiello. UMass scored the next two to even it up at 3-3 early in the second. The Dragons then scored their second man-up goal of the night when Marshal King set up Cole Shafer. For Shafer, it was his team-high 34th goal of the year. Jesse Leung, who had a huge night for the Minutemen, and King swapped goals, but that would be Drexel's last goal for some time.
UMass scored eight straight goals, the first just ten seconds after King's score, to take a commanding lead at 12-5. The Dragons went more than 23 minutes before finally making a semi-run in the fourth quarter. Drexel scored three straight, one each by Frazee, Jeremy Omrod and Chris Friedman to make it respectable at 12-8 with still more than half the fourth quarter to go. However, UMass scored the final two goals to earn the win and improve to 3-2 in league play and 6-7 overall.
Leung led all players with five goals. He entered the game with just four on the season. Dom St. Laurent and Ben Spencer each had two goals and an assist for UMass. Drexel was led by King and O'Donnell, who each scored and handed out two assists. D.J. Smith made 15 saves for UMass, while Jimmy Joe Granito's string of seven straight games with at least 10 saves was broken as he made seven stops on Friday night.
The Dragons begin play in the CAA Championships on Thursday, May 4. The winner of Saturday's Hofstra-Towson game will be the host for the CAA Semfinals. Drexel's opponent in the postseason won't be known until after the conclusion of that game.
