PHILADELPHIA – On a Sunday that brought Drexel tennis alumni out to Vidas Courts to celebrate the Class of 2017 seniors, the Dragons's men earned a 6-1 win over Delaware, while the women fell to the Blue Hens, 4-3. Drexel honored seniors Kashyap Ashok, Fiorella Coria, Daniil Ginzburg, Lea Winkler and Honami Yazawa.
The women's team falls to 15-7 (2-2 CAA) this season. Drexel's men now improve to 13-6 (2-0 CAA) on the year, tying the single season mark for wins in a season.
On the women's side, the Dragons fell just short of their conference rival, despite history being made by Winkler, who tied Rebecca Murphy for the most singles wins all-time by a Drexel women's player (61). The Dragons found themselves facing an uphill battle after dropping the doubles point, and the Blue Hens were able to split the singles matches to steal the victory. For the Dragons, Honami Yazawa beat Brooke Pilkington in the top spot, 7-5, 6-2, while Kendra Bunch came away with the 6-2, 6-3 victory over Denny LaMachia in the third spot. Winkler's win came over Annie Jaskulski in the fourth spot by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
The men's team jumped out to the victory, beginning with sweeping the doubles point. Sinan Orhon and the senior, Ashok, earned the 6-3 win in the top spot, while Hamza Laalej and Youssef Lahlou took a 6-3 win of their own at No.2. Balaji Lakshmanan and Alex Zenonos closed it out with a 7-5 win. In singles, the Dragons continued their dominance, beginning with Laalej at No. 1, as the junior beat Laurenz Lankes, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. At No. 2, Lakshmanan outlasted Blaise Casselbury, 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-0, followed by Orhon's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dominick Perez. Closing it out, Zenonos downed Dominick Perez, 7-6, 7-0, at No. 4, followed by Lahlou's victory over Roy Cheng, 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 in the final position.
The Dragons close out the regular season next weekend with the women's team at Towson on Friday and the men's team hosting James Madison on Saturday.
