COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Drexel women's soccer team was edged by Maryland, 2-1 to open the season on the road on Friday night. A goal from junior Vanessa Kara evened the score early in the second half, but Maryland was able to take back the lead and walk away with a victory in its first competition of the season.
The game remained scoreless through the first half, despite the Dragons outshooting the Terps, 4-2 in the period. After halftime, Maryland struck early with an unassisted goal from Mikayla Daves in the 50th minute from 25 yards out.
The Dragons, however, were quick to retaliate. Just over a minute later, Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausbøll played the ball through to Kara who slid it past the Maryland keeper from 10 yards out to even the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the 64th minute. It was then that Maryland pulled ahead again as Hope Lewandoski found the right upper 90. The Dragons were unable to overcome this deficit and would ultimately fall, 2-1 in their first game of the season.
Maryland outshot the Dragons on the game, 10-8. Senior keeper Christiana Ogunsami recorded four saves on the outing, while Maryland's Rachel Egyed totaled three.
The Dragons return to action on Monday, Aug.21 as they will return to Philadelphia to host Quinnipiac in their 2017 home-opener at Vidas Field. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
