PHILADELPHIA - A pair of first half goals from freshmen Raenah Campbell and Melissa Lyon helped the Dragons to shutout Quinnipiac in their home opener at Vidas Field on Monday night, 3-0. Junior Vanessa Kara added the Dragons' third goal of the night to mark her second in as many games.
Campbell was the first to strike for Drexel in the 22nd minute. The rookie found a ball dished from Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausbøll and headed it over the Quinnipiac keeper who had come out of the net for her first career goal as a Dragon.
Just over 10 minutes later, Campbell's freshman classmate Lyon ran the ball up the left side and into the box. There she fired a shot that went in on the near post and marked her own first career goal.
The Dragons went into halftime leading the Bobcats, 2-0 after outshooting them 7-2 in the first half.
The final blow from the Dragons came in the 63rd minute as Kara found a rebound in the box and put it back past the Quinnipiac keeper. The Dragons would hold the Bobcats off for the remaining time and go on to secure their first victory of the season by a 3-0 margin.
The Dragons outshot the Bobcats, 15-5. Keeper Christiana Ogunsami recorded three saves for Drexel, while Quinnipiac's Olivia Myszewski recorded three in the first half and Devan Malcolm recorded three of her own in the second half.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 1-1 overall while the Bobcats also move to 1-1 on the season.
Drexel heads to Chicago this weekend to compete in the Loyola Invitational. The Dragons will take on hosts Loyola (Chicago) on Friday, Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m. CDT before facing DePaul on Sunday in a 11 a.m. CDT game.
