CHICAGO – A late goal from junior Shaelyn McCarty helped the Drexel women's soccer team overcome Loyola Chicago on Friday night in its first game at the Loyola Invitational. The goal marks McCarty's first of the season.
The Dragons and Ramblers remained scoreless through the first half, despite Drexel outshooting Loyola, 7-2 in the period. The Dragons were only able to break the tie in the 80th minute when Heidi Gspurning played the ball through to McCarty who drove it into the box and beat Loyola's keeper at the near post to give Drexel a 1-0 advantage.
Loyola had a few opportunities to even the score in the remaining time, but the Drexel defense shut down its attempts. Their best shot to tie it came with just over two minutes to play, when the Ramblers' Sienna Cruz fired the ball towards the net, but Drexel keeper Christiana Ogunsami made a crucial save that helped the Dragons maintain their lead. Loyola was unable to overcome the deficit the Dragons had created and Drexel would ultimately walk away with its second win of the season.
The Dragons outshot the Ramblers, 15-13 on the contest. Ogunsami recorded three saves, while Loyola's Maddie Ford tallied seven on the outing.
With the win the Dragons improve to 2-1 on the season, while Loyola moves to 1-2 on the year.
The Dragons will return to action on Sunday when they will round out competition at the Loyola Invitational with a game against DePaul. First kick is set for 11 a.m. CDT.
