PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team fought to a shootout victory Sunday afternoon over the Bucknell Bison at Buckley Field, 3-2. Drexel improves to 4-6 (0-0 CAA) with the win, including a 3-1 mark at home, while Bucknell drops to 3-7 (0-1 Patriot).
On the hottest game day of the fall season, Drexel and Bucknell needed more than 100 minutes to determine a winner. The Dragons jumped out to an early lead on Tess Bernheimer's third goal of the season in the 13th minute, but Bucknell answered three minutes later with a score from Sarah Dimock. Drexel again took lead in the 57th minute off Megan Wiest's score on the penalty corner, but again the Bison found an answer as Brittany Willwerth knotted the score at 2-2 in the 65th minute. Drexel and Bucknell would each have chances in the overtime periods, but the score remained deadlocked into a shootout. Bucknell went up 2-0 in the shootout, but the Dragons got three straight from Rebecca Weinstock, Tess Bernheimer and Chandler McFeeley to win it.
Bucknell came out of the gates quickly, setting a fast pace and testing Drexel goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist in the opening minute. Drexel would regain control of the game's tempo, and it capitalized in the 13th minute when Bernheimer caught Bucknell's keeper Emily Finn out of position and scored from close range on the right side. The Bison would answer just three minutes later when Dimock deflected Sally Olson's blast from the top of the circle off the penalty corner to even the score. Bucknell continued to pressure the Dragons through the rest of the first half, subbing often to keep fresh legs on the field on the hot day, but it could not break through as the game went to the break tied up, 1-1.
After the half, Drexel again tried to wrestle control of the pace from the Bison. Following a Bucknell penalty corner attempt in the 56th minute, the Dragons quickly flipped the field and earned a penalty corner opportunity of their own. They would capitalize as Isis Cornelissen sent the ball to the top of the circle, Katie Bagdon stopped it and Wiest blasted home the goal from the point to make it a 2-1 game. The Dragons continued to pressure following the goal but could not break through. In the 65th minute, it would be the Bison to break through as Willwerth flipped one to the back of the cage out of the scramble in front to tie the game again. The 2-2 score would hold as the game headed to overtime.
In overtime, the Dragons had to battle a yellow card from Katie Pappas in the 75th minute. However, they would gain control despite being man down, and get good looks from Bernheimer and McFeeley right in front, but Finn was up to the task to keep the game tied. Nearing the end of the yellow card, Bucknell would have a chance of its own as it pulled Gilchrist out of goal, but Amy Ferguson was there at the goal line to make the defensive save. The score would again stay knotted at 2-2 as the game went into a second overtime. In the third minute of the second overtime, the Bison had two chances as Dimock hit the cross bar on a shot, got the rebound and sent the second shot wide. Then in the 90th minute, the Dragons had a chance on their end as Bernheimer broke free on a breakaway. The Bucknell defense would eventually catch up to the sophomore forward and challenge her shot to make for an easy save by Finn. Bucknell would have a penalty corner chance as time expired, but the Dragons were able to safely knock the ball away to send the game into a shootout.
Both teams huddled on the south side of the field, as one-by-one each sent up its shootout representative. Bucknell won the toss, chose to shoot first and finished off its first attempt by Chloe Poltonavage. After a Cornelissen miss on Drexel's first attempt, Allie Christopher found the back of the cage on the Bison's second to make it 2-0. However, the Dragons battled back as Weinstock's attempt was good, Gilchrist knocked away Bucknell's third and Bernheimer made her attempt to tie the shootout, 2-2. Gilchrist would again come up with a huge stop, before McFeeley knocked home her attempt. Gilchrist would then stop Kaelyn Long's attempt to close out the 3-2 victory.
Gilchrist made 10 saves on the day to Finn's seven. Bucknell outshot the Dragons 32-14 overall and 12-9 on shots on goal. Bucknell had 13 penalty corner chances to Drexel's four.
Drexel returns to action Friday night when it hosts the reigning national champions No. 5 Delaware at Buckley Field to open Colonial Athletic Association play.
