Quechee, Vt. - The Drexel golf team shot a sizzling 12-under-par 276 on Sunday to rally from a nine-stroke deficit to win the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge. Senior Aaron Fricke shot a five-under 67 on Sunday and won in an individual playoff to earn medalist honors as he finished the 36-hole event at 142 (-2).
The 12-under par score over the final 18 holes set a Drexel team record. The previous record of 11-under par was set at the JMU Invitational back in 2005 and tied last fall in the first round of the Matthews Collegiate Invitational. Fricke was outstanding in perhaps his best round during his career at Drexel. He made six birdies and had just one bogey, which came on the eighth hole. He finished the back with a three-under-par 33. Fricke finished the day by making birdie on the par five, 609-yard 18th hole which tied him with Evan Quinn of Princeton. He then made a birdie on the first playoff hole to pick up the win.
Angelo Giantsopoulos also had a five-under-par 67 in the final round, tying Fricke for the best individual performance of any of the 86 players competing on Sunday. Adam Mistretta (-2) was the third Dragon to post a sub-par score. Ethan Mangum closed the day with an even-par 72.
It was a complete team effort for the Dragons as everyone that made the trip contributed to the win. Drexel Head Coach Ben Feld brought three freshmen on this trip and each made an impact. Giantsopoulos tied for third overall with a 143, just one shot behind Fricke and Quinn. Mangum was just one shot behind Giantsopoulos and tied for seventh overall. Jeffrey Cunningham posted Drexel's best score on Saturday with a 71 in his first collegiate round.
Drexel will look for back-to-back victories when it heads to Elon to play in the Phoenix Invitational, which begins on Oct. 16.
