Swimming and Diving Open Season at La Salle

RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA – Paige Powell, Megan Sicinski and Jordan Washart earned their first collegiate victories as the men's and women's swimming team opened their season on Saturday against La Salle. The men's team fell 154-134 while the women's team took home a 192-106 victory.
"Really proud of how our freshmen showed up." Head Coach Adam Braun said, " To have three freshmen account for five individual wins in their first dual meet was great."
Alexa Kutch, Sicinski, Hollie Hopf and Kaitlin Perni started the day off on a high note for the Dragons earning a first place finish in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:47.05. The Drexel team of April Forsthoffer, Gabrielle Rudy, Charlotte Meyers and Alicia Diaz came in a close second, finishing at 1:48.25.
Jason Arthur, Ralph Cannarozzi III, Paris Raptis and Andrew Zhugayevich took home the first place finish in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:34.20 while Alberto Lagrutta, Zachary Valenzuela, Joe Short and John Scully fell just a second short behind La Salle for a third place finish.
"Two key pieces of the team are out currently due to injury in Kiran Richardson and Anthony Musciano and we definitely missed them today in sprint free events and diving." Head Coach Adam Braun said, "Overall, there were more positive than negative takeaways."
Niki Fistrovic earned a second place finish in the women's 1000-yard freestyle finishing in 10:51.55 while Patrick Cobb finished first on the men's side in 9:42.69.
Powell placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, hitting the wall at 1:56.08 while Natalie Gundling outlasted La Salle's Sarah Wyant for a third place finish coming in at 1:56.39. On the men's side, Luke Hanner earned a third place finish with a time of 1:44.68.
Later in the day, Kutch notched her second top three finish when she took home the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.04. Diaz was not far behind, as she finished second less than a second after Kutch. Jason Arthur made his mark for the men in the event, clocking in at 51.38 and Spencer Hill earned a third place finish hitting the wall at 53.20.
Rudy's first place finish came in the 100-yard breaststroke when she outlasted La Salle's Carrie Horan by over a second, 1:05.79. Sicinski placed third in the event with a time of 1:06.49. Cannarozzi notched a second place finish for the men at 57.52 and Zachary Valenzuela followed close behind in third at 58.90.
In the 200-yard butterfly, April Forsthoffer finished first clocking in at 2:07.98 and Jordan Washart beat out La Salle for a third place finish at 2:12.18. Paris Raptis took second for the men with a time of 1:50.31.
Diaz finished third in the 50-yard freestyle, 25.11, while John Scully did the same for the men with a time of 21.62.
Katie Caputo and Hannah Jordan earned second and third place finishes in the 3-meter dive, with final scores of 239.18 and 213.00, respectively.
Powell's first place finish came during the 100-yard freestyle when she beat out La Salle with a time of 53.30. Gundling wasn't far behind with a time of 54.23 for second. Stathias Malamas also earned a top-three finish for the men in the event, clocking in at 47.45 for third.
Kutch and Diaz earned first and second place in the 200-yard backstroke for the women while Arthur and Hill placed first and third for the men, respectively. Kutch finished three seconds ahead of Diaz at 2:05.36 while Arthur finished in 1:52.33 and Hill had a time of 1:56.22.
Sicinski's first place finish came in during the 200-yard breaststroke, 2:22.16, and Rudy finished the event in second, 2:25.01. Valenzuela took second for the men, clocking in at 2:08.15 while Cannarozzi hit the wall for third at 2:11.36.
In the women's 500-yard freestyle, Washart finished first at 5:18.88 for the women while Cobb and Dane Bell finished first and second for the men. Cobb earned a time of 4:41.34 and Bell hit the wall at 4:48.01.
Forsthoffer, Charlotte Myers and Hopf controlled the 100-yard butterfly, finishing the event in first, second and third place. Raptis finished second for the men in the event, 50.50.
Caputo placed in the top-three again during the 1-meter dive when she finished with a score of 278.48 and Jordan placed again with a score of 209.03 for third.
In the 200-yard IM, Sicinski notched the top spot finishing at 2:10.94, while Forsthoffer and Rudy rounded out the top three spots. Arthur earned another first place finish in the event for the men and Raptis finished third.
Wrapping up the meet, the team of Powell, Gundling, Perni and Kutch took home first in the 400-yard freestyle relay and Deborah Stoddard, Becca Churchill, Dora Gercsak and Myers finished third. The men's squad of Malamas, Cobb, Zhugayevich and Hanner then went on to earn second place in 3:10.47 to close out the meet.
The Dragons will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 27 when they host Seton Hall for a 1 p.m. meet.
