First-Half Surge Powers Field Hockey in Crucial CAA Win over Hofstra, 5-1
10/26/2018 7:58:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team came out firing Friday night at Buckley Field and scored a critical Colonial Athletic Association win over Hofstra, 5-1, to remain alive in the playoff hunt. The Dragons improved to 9-8 (2-3 CAA), while Hofstra fell to 5-12 (2-3 CAA). For a spot in the CAA playoffs, the Dragons will need a victory over Northeastern on Sunday.
Drexel scored four first-half goals to jump on the Pride early. The Dragons got two goals from Megan Wiest and a goal apiece from Avery Powell, Chandler McFeeley and Amy Ferguson.
The Dragons opened the scoring early and did not let up in the first half to grow a four-goal lead. After a couple early chances went unanswered, the Dragons broke through 7:22 into the first half when a long pass in from the right side ricocheted off the keeper Betty Bosma directly to Powell, who knocked it home. Less than three minutes later after an Erin Gilchrist save, the Dragons flipped the field and again found themselves on the score sheet when Wiest blasted a back hand shot from the left side to the top right-hand corner from a tough angle. About 15 minutes later, the Dragons scored two quick goals to double their lead and take full control. With less than 10 minutes left in the half, Wiest found herself taking the ball into the circle with only the keeper to beat. Bosma came out to challenged and saved Wiest's first shot attempt. However, Wiest collected the rebound, navigated around Bosma and rolled in her second goal of the game. With her two goals, Wiest moved into ninth all-time at Drexel with 63 career points. Then 81 seconds later, the Dragons broke through again, as Powell found McFeeley on the doorstep for the goal. Hofstra finally broke through with an answer from Cami Larsson on a penalty corner with two minutes left in the half.
Drexel wasted no time in the second half, scoring its fifth goal of the night just over five minutes into the half. Following a shot wide by Ferguson gave Hofstra the ball, the Pride back line sent a sloppy pass from the right towards the goal. Bosma tried to play the pass, but the ball found Ferguson's stick for an easy goal. Both sides would have opportunities the rest of the way, but the score would ultimately stick, 5-1.
Drexel outshot Hofstra, 15-8, overall and, 8-4, in shots on goal. Both keepers made three stops. Drexel had six penalty corners to the Pride's five.
The Dragons close the regular season Sunday at noon against Northeastern for Senior Day at Buckley Field. They will honor 11 seniors in a ceremony pregame.
