Charleston, S.C. – Charleston broke a 56-56 tie with a 12-0 run and went on to defeat Drexel. 89-67, at TD Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons fought to tie the game on a three-point play by Troy Harper, but Charleston responded by holding Drexel scoreless for a span of more than four minutes to cruise to the win. The Cougars remain alone in first place in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Jarrell Brantley had a huge game for the Cougars. The junior scored 30 points and was 12-for-18 from the floor. Nick Harris took advantage of Drexel's thin front court by scoring 21 points. He missed just one of his 10 shots in the contest. Grant Riller added 16. The Cougars shot 55 percent overall from the floor. On the other end, the Cougars' defense shut down the Dragons over the final 20 minutes. Drexel started off strong, shooting 60 percent in the first half. However, the second half was a different story as Drexel struggled throughout. The Dragons made just 11 field goals in the second half.
Tramaine Isabell led five Dragons in double figures scoring with 17 points. Harper added 11 off the bench. Alihan Demir, Sammy Mojica and Kurk Lee each finished with 10.
The Dragons came into the game without the services of Austin Williams, who was out with a foot injury. The Cougars went inside often and got two early fouls on Demir and Tyshawn Myles, who started in place of the injured Williams. Despite the foul trouble, the Dragons hung around, mainly due to their offense. Drexel got a significant contribution from Tadas Kararinas off the bench. The freshman played 11 minutes in the first half and had eight points and two blocks. Drexel trailed by just five at intermission after Lee drained a long three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half.
The Dragons will return home but continue their road trip next Thursday. Drexel will head to Boston to face Northeastern before finishing the trip at Hofstra on Saturday afternoon.
