Smithfield, R.I. – Reid Bowering tied a career-high with five goals and the Dragons scored four straight times in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeat Bryant, 12-9.
The Dragons and Bulldogs were tied at 8-8 after a Jake Buonaiuto bullet beat Chre Teitelbaum evening the score. Drexel made a defensive stop on the next possession and then proceeded to take control of the game. Bowering started the run with his second man-down goal of the game, this one coming with 9:27 to go in the contest. Matt Varian gave Drexel (2-3) an insurance goal less than three minutes later. With Drexel ahead 10-8, Teitelbaum came up with another save in goal, giving Drexel the ball. On the ensuing possession, Jake O'Donnell came from behind the net to beat Bryant (2-5) goaltender Kevin Beimfohr, putting the Dragons up by three. Bowering added his fifth of the game with less than two minutes to go on the man-up to clinch Drexel's second straight win. Bryant added a goal in the final seconds.
Bowering matched his career-high set last year at Hofstra with five goals. He now has a team-high 11 goals this season. Will Manganiello and Varian each scored twice for the Dragons. Jake Buonaiuto scored four times in a losing cause for the Bulldogs.
Drexel won the game despite being outshot, 37-32, and losing all but one face off in the game. Kenny Massa was 23-for-24 for the Bulldogs and had 12 ground balls. Teitelbaum had another good game in the cage for Drexel, turning aside 13 Bryant shots.
Drexel had a four-goal lead for the second time on the afternoon with just 3:01 to go in the third quarter at 8-4. Robert Frazee, Varian and Will Manganiello had the Drexel goals. For the second time in the game, the lead evaporated quickly. This time, the Bulldogs scored three in a span of 1:07 to make it a one-goal game.
The first quarter belonged to Drexel as the team was able to score four times while keeping the Bulldogs off the board. Marshal King started the scoring with a rifle from the left wing. Midway through the first quarter, Varian set up Bowering for his first of the day. Five minutes later, Bowering was at it again. This time, Frazee delivered Bowering the ball just outside the crease and he deposited it in the back of the net, making it a three-goal game. The Dragons added another right before the end of the period when Will Manganiello scored his seventh of the season.
The second quarter was a different story. Bryant got on the board in the first minute on the man-up on a Buonaiuto goal. After Bowering answered to make it 5-1, the game settled in with each team having possessions but no goals. However, Bryant exploded for three goal in a 41- second span. Buonaiuto started the scoring. On the face-off, the teams battled and Bryant got control and sped down field. Jake Fiske set up Cam Ziegler, cutting the Drexel lead to just two. The Bulldogs won the next face-off as well and this time, after Drexel forced a turnover, the Dragons gave it right back. Bryant's Zach Coffey scored in the unsettled situation to make it 5-4. The Bulldogs outshot Drexel, 18-14, in the opening 30 minutes and won nine of 10 face offs.
The Dragons have a short turnaround as they visit Saint Joseph's on Tuesday afternoon. Drexel returns to Vidas Field next Saturday when Georgetown makes a visit to West Philadelphia.
