DELAND, Fla. – Linda Rush rocketed a game-winning grand slam out of center field in the bottom of the sixth-inning for a 9-8 comeback victory against Bethune-Cookman on Sunday morning to close out play at the Stetson Tournament in DeLand, Fla.
Drexel held an early 2-1 advantage after Rush hit a two-run homer out of center field in the bottom of the first inning, but Bethune-Cookman broke the game open with a seven-run third inning to take back the lead. Coming up with a big play after the Wildcats eighth run, Taylor Lee fired the ball to third base to pick off the next runner for a third out and put an end to the rally.
With two outs and two on base in the bottom of the third, Elena Woulfe sliced the deficit in half with a double to center field to push Lee and Megan Trivelpiece across the plate.
After two scoreless innings, Drexel came out with vengeance and used a huge five-run sixth inning to pull ahead with the comeback victory. A walk with the bases loaded forced the Dragons first run across the plate before Rush stepped up with composure and belted a game-winning grand slam out of center field for her second home run of the day.
Pitcher Devon Grippe ran into trouble in the seventh when the Wildcats had runners on second and third with one out, but she found her way out by fanning the next batter and causing a groundout. The sophomore was credited with the win and improved her record to 1-2. She pitched four innings while yielding four hits and zero runs.
Drexel will return to action on Saturday, March 10 as it travels to Lafayette for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
