JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Devon Grippe and Brooklyn Daly each hurled a complete game as the Drexel softball team swept Saint Peter's on Tuesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. The Dragon's defeated the Peacocks, 8-1, in game one before blanking Saint Peter's, 11-0, in the nightcap.
With one out and runners on base in the third, Drexel opened the scoring in game one using back-to-back walks and a Taylor M. Lee sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage. Megan Trivelpiece then laced a single through center field to score Linda Rush before Reilly Jo Swanson hit a two-run single to pad the Dragon's lead, 5-0.
In the fifth inning, Drexel extended its advantage, 6-0, with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jenelle Ladrido before the Peacocks got one back in the sixth. The Dragon's defense, however, would continue to hold as that was the only run they allowed.
Drexel then jumped out to an 8-1 lead to close out the game using a Saint Peter's fielding error and a Ladrido RBI double to right center.
Elena Woulfe went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate while Ladrido went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a sacrifice fly. Brooklyn Daly pitched a complete game and picked up the win to improve her record, 5-4. She allowed just four hits and one run while striking out four.
In game two, the Dragons took an early 2-0 lead with a RBI double by Ladrido, who was driven in by a Woulfe single to right field.
After the third inning, Drexel jumped out to a 7-0 advantage thanks to Holly Bridgman and Hannah Walker. Bridgman got things started with a two-run single to plate Woulfe and two-time CAA Rookie of the Week, Kristi DiMeo, before a Walker single with the bases loaded drove in three more.
Drexel then went on to score three in the fourth and one in the fifth to run-rule the Peacocks for the sweep. Ladrido opened the scoring in the fourth with a ground out to first to send in DiMeo before a Woulfe single and a Saint Peter's fielding error gave the Dragons their 10th run of the game. Drexel's final run of the day would come in the fifth when Lee smacked a double to right center to drive in Christina Toven.
Lee led the Dragons going 3-for-4 with three doubles and one RBI while DiMeo went 3-for-4 with a double and Woulfe went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Grippe picked up the win in the circle to improve her record to 3-7 after pitching a five-inning perfect game, yielding three hits and striking out four.
Drexel will return to action on Wednesday, April 18 when it hosts La Salle for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
