Dragons Season Comes to an End in Delaware

Newark, Del. - Delaware scored seven straight goals in the second half to blow open the game on its way to a 17-8 win against Drexel at Delaware Stadium. The Dragons ended the season with a 5-8 record, while the Blue Hens advanced to the CAA Championships for the first time since 2014. Drexel had its six-game winning streak against the Blue Hens (6-7) snapped. Reid Bowering led Drexel with three goals.
Drexel trailed by just three early in the third quarter after Bowering set up Marshal King with a nice pass over the defense on the doorstep. With 5:45 to go in the quarter, Will Hirschmann started the seven-goal assault that put the game well in hand for the Blue Hens. It was one of seven goals for Hirschmann, who also had an assist for eight points. The lead extended to 15-5 before Drexel finally broke the drought. Bowering had two fourth quarter goals before Drexel emptied the bench late. Wade Shervin had the Dragons final goal of the game.
Charlie Kitchen had five goals and six points. The Blue Hens fired 56 shots in the game, to just 30 for Drexel. Joe Eisele also had a hat trick for Delaware.
Bowering picked up his 10th career hat trick and finished his sophomore year with 31 goals. Varian had a goal and assist to finish the year with 49 points. Jimmeh Koita was 13-for-26 on face offs in the game, while Chre Teitelbaum recorded 13 saves in his final appearance as a Dragon.
Delaware's offense had a big second quarter, scoring six goals as it took a commanding 8-3 lead into the locker room for halftime. Kitchen had three of his five goals in the second quarter and Hirschmann also scored twice in the second. Delaware fired 20 shots at Drexel goalkeeper Chre Teitelbaum in the quarter and outshot Drexel, 34-12, in the first 30 minutes of the game. Varian and Bowering were Drexel's goal scorers in the quarter.

Hirschmann opened the scoring with a rifle into the top corner from 15 yards out five minutes into the game. Kitchen gave the Hens a 2-0 lead with 4:07 to play. He came in from behind the net after beating a Drexel defender. The Dragons got finally got on the board when Chris McLallen whipped a shot from the left side, 10 yards out, just after a Blue Hen was released from the penalty box. Varian was credited with the assist, and despite being outshot, 14-7, Drexel trailed by just one.
