PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Drexel women's soccer team was edged by Rutgers on the road on Sunday evening. Kiera Hennessy scored her first goal of the season to tie the match 1-1 in the first half but the Scarlet Knights retaliated with the go-ahead goal in the 49th minute for the 2-1 victory.
Rutgers' Gabby Provenzano was the first to get the Scarlet Knights on the board with a goal scored in the 16th minute. Taylor Aylmer set up Provenzano on a free kick and allowed her to one-time it six yards out.
Drexel then evened the score in the 36th minute when Hennessy headed a Natalie Pantalone corner kick into the back of the net from the top of the six-yard line.
The Scarlet Knights, however, came out of half time with urgency as Amirah Ali knocked a rebounded shot past Drexel goalkeeper Libby Baeza to take back the lead in the 49th minute of play. The Dragons had one final opportunity from Raenah Campbell with less than five minutes remaining, but Rutgers was able to hold off Drexel for the remainder of the half and walked away with their second win of the season.
Rutgers out shot the Dragons, 11-8. Baeza recorded four saves for Drexel in between the pipes, while Rutgers' Meagan McClelland turned away three shots.
The Dragons will return to action on Friday, Aug. 24 when they host Columbia at the Vidas Athletic Complex for a 5 p.m. matchup.
