Men's Soccer Scores 2-1 Comeback in OT at Lehigh
8/27/2018 9:41:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Drexel men's soccer team came from behind on Monday night to remain undefeated on the young season as the Dragons defeated Lehigh, 2-1. Mathias Ebbesen tied the score in the 71st minute, forcing overtime where Griffin Mallas sent the Dragons home happy with his second goal of the season.
Drexel is now 2-0-0 for the year, the first time it has won its first two games since 2010. The Dragons outdid Lehigh (0-2-0) 9-5 in shots on goal, edging the Mountain Hawks 18-17 in overall shots taken. Seven of those shots on goal came after halftime as the Dragons' relentless attack wore down Lehigh. Stephen Kopsachilis, a redshirt-freshman making his first collegiate appearance in goal, stopped four of the five shots that went his way.
After a scoreless first half, it was Lehigh that got on the board first when Mark Forrest headed a ball across the box to Trevor Koski, who sent it back towards the far post for his goal. That deficit, their first of the season, lit a fire under the Dragons, who turned up the offensive pressure in an effort to find an equalizer.
Find it they did in the 71st minute, when Chris Carroll weaved his way into the box, drawing defenders down to him. He sidestepped them and sent it back to Ebbesen near the top of the box. The senior rifled a low shot inside the near post to tie things up at 1-1.
The score remained that way through regulation. Just over three minutes into the overtime, Drexel again applied significant pressure, working the ball to Friday night's hero Kwesi Allen in the middle of the box. He laced a shot that appeared destined for the top of the net, but it was deflected just over the crossbar by Lehigh keeper Will Smith.
Though it saved a goal for the moment, Smith's save set up a Drexel corner. The Dragons quickly put the ball in play, where Adam Nork dribbled back down the left sideline before wheeling and sending a cross into the box. It found Mallas, who headed it home for the golden goal.
The win was Drexel's first on the road since a 1-0 victory at James Madison on Sept. 26, 2015. The Dragons will have an opportunity to get another road victory on Friday night, as they play the second of three consecutive contests away from Vidas Field at George Mason. That game is set to kick off at 6 p.m.
