PHILADELPHIA - Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alexis Sokach earned her first career shutout Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field as the Drexel field hockey team blanked Indiana of the Big Ten, 2-0. The Dragons improved to 3-1 to open the year, while the Hoosiers fell to 1-3.
Sokach made six second-half saves as the Dragons weathered a late push from Indiana. Puk Thewessen opened the game's scoring with a goal off the penalty corner in the first half with the double assist going to Tess Bernheimer and Ally Chapis, while Amy Ferguson added an insurance goal for Drexel midway through the second off the feed from Layne Litsinger.
Drexel settled in quickly against Indiana's fast pace. The Dragons got the first scoring opportunity of the day and capitalized. After Hoosiers keeper Shelby Querry stopped a Chandler McFeeley shot, the Dragons got a penalty corner chance and buried it. Bernheimer entered the ball to the waiting Chapis, who stopped the pass for the blast from Thewessen. The goal was Thewessen's second in as many games on the weekend. Drexel would continue to push through the rest of the first half, including four penalty corners in a two-minute span, but the score would remain 1-0 heading into the break.
Indiana came out swinging in the second half, earning three early corner chances. Sokach, however, was up for the challenge, turning away two Hoosiers shots in the first four minutes. Fourteen minutes into the second half, the Dragons quickly flipped the field following an Indiana shot for a scoring chance. After a long ball bounded off Querry, Litsinger found herself with the ball inside the circle on the left side of the cage. She then dropped a pass towards the middle for the waiting Ferguson, who knocked it home for the score. Both teams would continue to go back and forth. Indiana's best chance came with just under seven minutes left. A foul in the circle gave Indiana's Ciara Girouard a penalty stroke chance. Girouard, however, sent the shot high and wide right as Sokach preserved her shutout. The Dragons would go on to close out the win, 2-0.
The Hoosiers outshot Drexel, 14-12, with a dozen of their shots coming after halftime. Querry made five saves for Indiana to Sokach's six, which all came in the second half. Eight of Indiana's nine penalty corners came in the second, while Drexel had 10 for the contest.
The Dragons make their first road trip of the season next weekend to visit Bryant at Brown on Friday followed by Yale on Sunday afternoon.
