PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Drexel field hockey team won its first road game and fourth straight game overall Friday afternoon, defeating Bryant in a game at Brown, 3-2. The Dragons improved to 4-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-5.
Drexel used goals from Tess Horan, Tess Bernheimer and Megan Weist to outlast Bryant. The Dragons got on the board first, needing just 3:29 to do so. Wiest, shortly after ripping off two shots that were saved by Bryant keeper Marijn Jaarsma, found Horan for Horan's first goal of the season. Nine minutes later, Alexis Sokach made a save, but Bryant corralled the rebound and Emily Perryman evened the score. The score remained tied over the next 15 minutes before Sydney Muntone found Bernheimer for the goal, her fourth of the year, to go ahead 2-1 with just under eight minutes to go to the half.
After the break, the Dragons again wasted no time getting on the board. Less than two and a half minutes into the second half, Wiest blasted her third goal of the season past Jaarsma to extend Drexel's lead to 3-1. Bryant, however, would not go away. About a minute later, the Bulldogs' Leyna DiMarco took the pass from Brittany Gouws to cut the Dragons' lead in half. Neither team would take full control of the contest from that point on, though Bryant would put the pressure on in the final minute. The Bulldogs had a penalty corner chance with less than a minute on the clock, but Sokach came up with a big stop on Gouws' attempt with three seconds left. Drexel, though, was unable to clear the ball from the circle, and Bryant earned another penalty corner chance with zeroes on the clock. Gouws again took the shot, but this time it was blocked and cleared as the Dragons held onto the 3-2 win.
Bryant outshot Drexel, 12-11, though the Dragons had one more shot on goal, 7-6. Sokach and Jaarsma each finished with four stops. Sokach improved to 4-0 in her first four career starts. Bryant finished with nearly twice as many penalty corner chances as Drexel, 9-5.
The Dragons close out the weekend Sunday after at Yale at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
