PHILADELPHIA - Lafayette's Lisa van der Geest batted a Molly McAndrew pass out of the air to score 1:39 into overtime as the Drexel field hockey team fell Friday night at Buckley Field, 2-1. Drexel is now 4-4 on the year, while Lafayette improved to 2-6 overall.
The Dragons came out with an early scoring chance off a Lafayette mistake. Just over 2:30 into the game, Megan Wiest took a feed in transition, Lafayette keeper Sarah Park came out to challenge, and Wiest spun for the backhand shot, but the Leopards' Rachel Bird was there to make the defensive save. Lafayette then flipped the field and challenged the Dragons, and keeper Erin Gilchrist. Gilchrist, who was making her second start upon returning to the team, was able to keep the Leopards off the board and weather their early aggression. The Dragons would strike first, however. Megan Wiest drove from left to right along the endline and found Avery Powell on the near post for the tip-in 13:38 into the first half. It was Powell's second of her freshman campaign. Lafayette would even the score 10 minutes later as Audrey Sawer collected the rebound and put one past Gilchrist. The score remained tied at the half.
Despite there being no goals put on the board in the second half, the period did not lack for action. Lafayette challenged Gilchrist throughout, as she made three of her seven stops in the second half. The Dragons found life with five minutes to go, but Lafayette's Sarah Park came up huge with the game on the line. On the penalty corner, Wiest blasted a shot that was turned away by Park with a brilliant stick save, despite it being called wide by the umpire. Less than two and a half minutes later, she stopped a shot from Amy Ferguson. With the final seconds ticking down, Park stopped shots by Tess Bernheimer (12 seconds left) and Avery Powell (four seconds left) to keep the score tied. Drexel had a penalty corner with time expired, but Delaney Baxendale's shot was blocked and cleared.
In overtime, Drexel had a quick chance, but a centering pass just barely missed Wiest's stick in front. Lafayette quickly flipped the field. McAndrew drove left to right along the endline, spun and flipped the ball past her defender, then flipped a pass in the air to van der Geest. Van der Geest batted the ball out of mid-air in front of the goal and past Gilchrist for the game-winner 99 seconds into the extra session, 2-1.
The Leopards outshot the Dragons, 12-9, and 9-5 in shots on goal. Gilchrist made seven saves, while Park made three. Lafayette finished with five penalty corner chances to Drexel's four (all in the second half).
The Dragons return to action Friday night at No. 15 Delaware at 6 p.m.
