BOONE, N.C. – The Drexel wrestling program sent two wrestlers to Boone, N.C. on Saturday for the Appalachian State Open. Sophomore Evan Barczak had a strong showing, taking first place at 157 pounds while true freshman Anthony Walters finished runner-up at 184 pounds as both faced two of the nation's top recruits from last year along their way.

Barczak claimed first place in the 157 bracket. The sophomore opened his day with a 22-7 technical fall over Presbyterian's Hunter Corwin. Barczak had six takedowns with two nearfall points to lead 14-5 after the first period as Corwin had five escapes. Two more second-period takedowns with four nearfall points helped Barczak advance to the quarterfinals.
Barczak faced The Citadel's Cole Burke in the quarterfinals where he earned a win by fall at 3:55. The sophomore had two takedowns in the first followed by a reversal, two nearfall points and two more takedowns before the pin to win.
In the semifinals, his bout against Virginia's Justin McCoy, one of the nation's top recruits a year ago, lasted all three periods. Scoreless heading into the final period, Barczak earned an escape before he added a late takedown in addition to the riding point to grab the 4-0 decision win.
Barczak sealed the first-place bout with a 7-5 decision against Campbell's Ben Barton. Tied 3-3 after each had an escape and takedown in the opening period, Barczak went up 5-3 with an escape and stall point in the second period. Barton got back within one in the third after an early escape as Barczak took the match with a takedown in the third.

Walters started his day with a quarterfinals win over Virginia's Jack Walsh. The opening bout did not last long as Walters pinned Walsh in 49 seconds. He advanced to face Ohio's Blake Wilson in the semifinals. Two first-period takedowns helped the Drexel freshman go up 4-2 on Wilson after one. An escape and third takedown in the second period gave him a comfortable 7-2 edge. He added a fourth takedown and the riding time point to win 10-4.
Walters moved forward and faced arguably the No. 1 recruit in the nation last year in the finals, Trent Hidlay of NC State. Walters earned six escape points in the bout but Hidlay's eight takedowns, including four in the third period, proved too much as Walters dropped the 18-6 major decision.
