PHILADELPHIA – Goals in both halves, from Melissa Lyon and Ali Shick, gave Drexel women's soccer a 2-0 home win over CAA foe Towson on Thursday night at Vidas Field. The win is the first this season against a conference opponent for the Dragons (5-6-3, 1-3-1), who submitted a dominating performance against the Tigers.
The win gives Drexel a six-match unbeaten streak over the Tigers (3-9-1, 0-4-0), the longest such streak of the series by either side.
Lyon notched her second goal of the season – the second-most on the team. The junior also ranks second on the team in total points with six. Shick's goal gave the senior her first collegiate points.
Libby Baeza made one save to notch her 10th-career shutout. She becomes the fourth Dragon with double-digit clean sheets in a career.
The Dragons opened the game with a bang, firing off 14 shots in the first half and produced bona fide scoring opportunities off two set pieces.
Drexel needed only five minutes to earn its first corner, and nearly scored if not for Joana Seca striking the right post. Maggie Daeche took a stab at the rebound but was turned away by Delaney Mitchell.
That save gave the Dragons their second corner in less than 60 seconds, and once again Drexel nearly scored. Daeche was the first to the delivery and flicked a headed attempt that was turned away off Mitchell's fingertips and onto the cross bar. Seca had two tries to put the rebound home but was stonewalled both times.
Following a thrilling opening, the game settled down until Lyon's goal in the 35th minute. Lyon received the ball on the left side of midfield and drove towards the middle of the pitch to line up a right-footed strike that beat Mitchell high.
Drexel kept up the intensity after halftime, registering 12 more shot attempts and forcing three saves in the second period. The Dragons finally converted one of their seven corner kicks into a goal in the 71st minute, when Seca picked out Shick at the far post for a close-range finish.
The Dragons' tight defense did the rest, containing the Tigers to preserve their fourth shutout of the season. Drexel conceded only two shot attempts in the second half, and only six for the game, as Baeza went the entire period without facing an on-target attempt.
Drexel takes its two-match unbeaten streak down south on Sunday for a noon contest at UNCW.
