WILMINGTON, N.C. – Goals on each side of halftime carried UNCW past Drexel women's soccer in a 2-0 decision at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps a two-match unbeaten streak for the Dragons (5-7-3, 1-4-1 CAA), who were fresh off their first conference win of the season.
The home team started strong on Sunday, scoring just 4:08 into the match. The Seahawks (9-4-0, 5-1-0) turned Drexel over in its defensive half and quickly launched an attack that saw Lauren Ellis slot a through ball for Grace Hersey, who finished past an onrushing Libby Baeza.
A penalty kick after the intermission doubled UNCW's advantage. Morgan Nanni beat Baeza with a hard strike into the left side netting of the goal in the 64th minute.
Baeza (4-6-2) made five more stops on Sunday, bringing her season total to 42. The senior keeper now has 137 saves in her collegiate career.
Offensively, Drexel tested UNCW goalkeeper Sydney Schneider twice, but Schneider answered the bell both times. Gwyn Godin fired off both of the Dragons' on-target attempts.
Drexel returns to Vidas Field for its two final home matches of the year. The Dragons host William & Mary on Saturday at 12 p.m. before battling Northeastern on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.
