Women’s Soccer Falls in Overtime to William & Mary, 2-1
10/19/2019 2:59:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Two unanswered goals from William & Mary erased an 11th minute Melissa Lyon tally and gave the visiting Tribe a 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday afternoon.
Drexel (5-8-3, 1-5-1 CAA) started off the match aggressively, pressing the Tribe (4-10-2, 2-4-1) into their own defensive third. With the majority of the ball, the Dragons needed less than 11 minutes to pull ahead, scoring on their first shot of the game.
With the ball in its own goal box, William & Mary flubbed several clearances before the ball finally landed at Lyon's feet. The junior from Perkasie, Pa. drove towards the goal before slotting home a right-footed strike at the far post.
The marker was the third this season for Lyon, who ranks second on the team in goals and points (eight) and is joint-second among the Dragons in assists (two) as well.
Drexel nearly doubled its advantage in the 27th minute. Gwyn Godin shot near post following a corner kick. Tribe goalkeeper Katelyn Briguglio had no chance at making a save, but the quick feet of a William & Mary defender cleared the ball off the line.
Godin was honored with the Laura Meikle Koch Coaches' Award at halftime of Saturday's match. The award is presented annually to the member of the team that best displays the traits that defined the way Meikle Koch, a four-year member of the soccer program who passed away in 2008 at the age of 28 after a courageous battle with cancer, played the game.
With 52 percent of possession in the first half, Drexel held William & Mary to three shot attempts. Libby Baeza made one save.
Roles were reversed to start the second half with the Tribe seizing the early initiative. William & Mary fired off five shot attempts in the first five minutes, forcing a pair of saves from Baeza in the process. That pressure final broke in the 61st minute, when Sarah Segan collected a ball from Courtney Miles and beat Baeza at the far post.
Play evened out following Segan's marker with Drexel out-shooting William & Mary 5-3 for the remainder of the half. Lyon nearly tied the match in the 67th minute but could not chip the ball over an onrushing Briguglio.
Drexel owned the final 15 minutes of regulation and had two looks at the go-ahead goal.
Morgan Rees hit the crossbar in the 79th minute following a rebound of her own blocked attempt. The shot was out of Briguglio's reach but could not dip below the woodwork. With overtime looming, Shae Tomlinson curled a shot towards the far post in the final minute, but the attempt was saved.
Drexel started overtime with a heavy share of possession but could not find the final touch to unlike the William & Mary defense. The Tribe capitalized on their second attempt of overtime as Colleen Norton finished off a chipped ball from Segan for the golden goal.
Baeza made seven saves in the losing effort, including one in overtime.
The Dragons resume play next Thursday at home to Northeastern for senior night.
