PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (3-9) dropped a Sunday afternoon home contest to the Penn Quakers (5-6) by a final of 2-1 in overtime from Buckley Field.
With 6:26 on the clock in OT, Penn was awarded a penalty stroke, which Elita Van Staden converted to give the Quakers the 2-1 victory.
After a scoreless first half, junior Katie Ronan scored the game's first goal of the afternoon 8:26 into the third quarter after she tipped in a shot from freshman Amber Brouwer, 1-0. It came as Ronan's second goal and Brouwer's second assist of the year.
But Penn responded just over three minutes later as Erin Quinn evened the score after a long pass by Maddy Fagan into the circle, 1-1.
With the score knotted at 1-1 after 60 minutes, the tilt went to overtime.
Just 3:34 into the first overtime period, the Quakers were able to get past the last line of Drexel's backs before the Dragons committed a foul, turning into a penalty stroke for Penn.
Drexel pulled its starting goalkeeper Megan Hadfield, who played 63:34, in favor of redshirt sophomore Alexis Sokach. Penn bought in Van Staden off the bench to take the stroke. Van Staden placed the ball in the top right corner of the cage, past the reach of Sokach.
In total, Penn led shots, 17-2, shots on goal, 9-1, and penalty corners, 7-3.
Drexel's Denise Zelenak sits at 249 career wins as a head coach.
