PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (3-10, 1-2 CAA) dropped its Friday night conference contest to the William & Mary Tribe (8-5, 3-0 CAA) by a final of 3-2 from Buckley Field.
A penalty stroke right at the beginning of the fourth quarter made the difference on Friday as the Tribe came away with the win.
Drexel came right out of the gates with offensive pressure in the first quarter. The Dragons earned three penalty corners and attempted four shots in the first five minutes while the Tribe did not fire off a shot until midway through the opening quarter.
William & Mary struck first 8:05 into the contest as Cassidy Goodwin scored her first goal the evening. A minute and a half later, Goodwin came away with her second to put the Tribe up 2-0 on an assist from Christie van de Kamp.
Shots and corners were relatively even at halftime with W&M leading shots, 8-7, and corners, 6-5. Drexel freshman goalkeeper Megan Hadfield made three stops in the first 30 minutes while W&M's Kimi Jones had two.
In the third quarter, William & Mary swapped its goalkeeper in favor of reserve Morgan Connor, who got the second-half start in the cage.
Drexel eventually broke through for its first goal, 5:18 into the third quarter, off the stick of senior Tess Horan with an assist from freshman Amber Brouwer. It came as Horan's first goal of the season and Brouwer's third assist in the last four games.
Fellow senior Avery Powell recorded her fifth goal of the year with 3:24 to play in the third to even the score, 2-2.
The Tribe switched back to their starting goalkeeper to start the fourth quarter but the early action came on the other side of the field as William & Mary was awarded and converted a penalty stroke 20 seconds into the period to go up 3-2. van de Kamp scored the goal to put the Tribe up.
It marked the second-straight game that the Dragons' opponent scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke.
A late W&M yellow card along with Drexel's empty cage gave the Dragons a two-field player advantage but the squad could not get a shot off in the final 2:43 as the 3-2 score held in favor of the Tribe.
Hadfield ended with six saves on the night.
