PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (3-11) hung close with No. 7 University of Virginia (13-3) on a rainy Sunday afternoon from Buckley Field but could not overcome the Cavaliers as the Dragons fell by a final of 3-2.
All five goals on Sunday came in the first half with the teams alternating goals. It marked the eighth-straight game that was decided by one goal for the Dragons. Luck has not been on Drexel's side as the squad is 2-6 over that span including two losses where a penalty stroke came as the game-winning goal.
Virginia scored the first goal of the afternoon 3:25 into the contest when Annie McDonough back handed a close range shot with an assist from Colleen Norair.
The Dragons responded four minutes later when senior Tess Horan scored her second goal of the season after played the ball following a deflection. It came as Horan's second goal in as many games.
With 36 seconds to play in the first quarter, Virginia's Greer Gill tapped in a close range shot on the goal line to put the Cavaliers up, 2-1.
Junior Chandler McFeeley came away with her first goal of the season in the opening minute of the second quarter to even things back up at 2-2. Following a penalty corner, the junior took a shot from the goal line from a bad angle but was able to get it behind the goalkeeper and into the cage.
The final goal of the afternoon, which came as the game winner, was with 5:02 to play in the half. Virginia's Anzel Viljoen scored her team-leading sixth of the year on an assist from Rachel Robinson, 3-2.
Drexel led shots, 6-5, and penalty corners, 2-1, at the break.
Though the score remained the same throughout the second half, the Dragons did everything they could to keep it that way.
Virginia stepped up its offensive pressure with 16 shots in the second half compared to five in the opening 30 minutes. After just the one penalty corner, the Cavaliers had another seven in the second half.
Drexel was able to stay in the game with strong defensive effort which was best displayed when sophomore Puk Thewessen made a defensive save on a ball inches away from going in the cage.
