PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (4-11, 2-2 CAA) used four unanswered goals to pick up a dramatic comeback victory over the Towson Tigers (3-13, 0-3 CAA) on Friday evening from Buckley Field by a final of 4-3. Drexel Head Coach Denise also came away with her 250th career victory.
A key moment in the affair came with 6:26 left as Zelenak decided to pull the Drexel goalkeeper with a large chuck on time left on the clock. The move paid off as Drexel tied up the game 26 second later before adding their fourth and final a few minutes later to complete the comeback.
Trailing 3-0 after Towson goals in the 2nd, 32nd, and 36th minutes, Drexel flipped the script in the final 20 minutes to pick up the conference win.
The Tigers tallied goals two minutes into each half and their final early in the third quarter.
Drexel freshman Amber Brouwer responded for the Dragons' first goal of the night late in the third quarter to bring the score to 3-1. It came as the freshman's first collegiate goal as sophomore Puk Thewessen notched an assist on the play.
Drexel brought a new energy into the fourth quarter after scoring their first goal to end the third period.
Brouwer added another point to her credit via an assist as senior Tess Horan scored her first of two as she tipped the ball high out of the air into the back of the cage, 3-2.
Following the goal, Drexel pulled its goalkeeper, freshman Megan Hadfield, in favor of the extra position play. Not half a minute later, Horan tied it up with her second goal of the night and her fourth of the season on an assist from sophomore Sharri Kambesis. The point was the first of Kambesis' career.
After Drexel tied it up, senior Tess Bernheimer served a two-minute green card from 6:51 to 4:51 on the clock. The Dragons gained possession with roughly five minutes on the clock as sophomore Avery Powell started to make her way up the field. Bernheimer returned from her penalty as Powell found her in stride past midfield. Bernheimer then placed a perfect pass to sophomore Chandler McFeeley inside the circle before McFeeley backhanded a ball past the Towson goalkeeper for the game-winning goal with 3:52 on the clock.
The victory continued a streak of nine-straight games decided by one goal and also keeps Drexel in the mix for the CAA Tournament. At 2-2, Drexel is tied with James Madison, who owns the tiebreak and sits in fourth place. Northeastern is alone in third at 2-1 while No. 12 Delaware and William & Mary are both 3-0 at the top.
