The Cowboys (1-0), who were undefeated in dual competition last season, led wire-to-wire. No. 4-ranked Nick Piccininni, a two-time all-American, collected a 16-1 technical fall over Dante Mininno at 125 pounds to start the match.
Olson responded with a 5-1 decision victory over Reece Witcraft. The junior from Shippensburg, Pa. scored the first points of the bout on a first-period takedown and led 3-0 after three minutes. Starting the third in the down position and with a 3-1 lead, Olson added an insurance point on an escape and reaped the rewards of his riding time to seal the victory.
Tyler Williams dropped a 6-0 decision to Dusty Hone at 141 pounds, and Oklahoma State pushed its lead to 8-3. At 149 pounds, Vincent Foggia battled third-ranked Boo Lewallen in the first period and only trailed 4-1 after the first period. Lewallen, a 2018 all-American, pulled away in the latter stages of the match for a 10-2 major decision.
No. 29 Wyatt Sheets spoiled the return of 32nd-ranked Parker Kropman with a 13-3 major decision victory at 157 pounds. Kropman struck first with a takedown in the first period and was up 2-1 after three minutes. With the bout tied 3-3 heading to the final period, Sheets pulled away with 10 unanswered to give the Cowboys a 16-3 edge.
Tenth-ranked Ebed Jarrell dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 14 Travis Wittlake at 165 pounds in the second bout between ranked foes.
A thriller was in store at 174 pounds, where Andrew Shomers topped Michael O'Malley late in sudden victory. O'Malley led 2-0 after the first, but Shomers knotted the score in the second. After a scoreless third, the two grapplers went to overtime. With the first minute of overtime winding down, Shomers bested O'Malley in a scramble situation, winning the match by a 4-2 score with just one second remaining in the period.
Anthony Montalvo scored a 14-3 major decision over Owen Brooks at 184 pounds. Dakota Geer, the second-ranked wrestler and a reigning all-American at 184 pounds, moved up one weight class and topped Bryan McLaughlin via 16-7 major decision.
Sean O'Malley sent the 1,000-plus fans inside the DAC home on a high note with a tense 2-1 decision over Austin Harris. O'Malley started the second period in the down position and went ahead 2-0 with a reversal. He began the final period on top. Although he could not ride out Harris, O'Malley limited his opponent to an escape and saw out his narrow victory.
