Baltimore. Md. - UMBC opened the second half with a 22-2 run and defeated Drexel at the UMBC Events Center, 85-60. With the loss, the Dragons dropped to 4-4 on the season. UMBC is now 5-3. Sam Green led the Dragons with a career-high 16 points.
Drexel's offense really struggled in the early going of the second half. T.J. Bickerstaff's two free throws were the only Drexel points in the first eight minutes as UMBC opened up a big lead. Camren Wynter finally got the Dragons a field goal with 11:53 to play in the game, but at that point, UMBC had taken control of the game. Drexel wasn't able to cut the lead under 20 points the rest of the way.
The Dragons got off to a good start in Baltimore, making eight of their first 11 shots on the way to an early nine-point lead. However, Drexel struggled to take care of the ball and committed 12 first-half turnovers as the Retrievers were able to take a nine-point lead at intermission. Drexel's offense went cold late in the half and at one point went almost six minutes without a field goal. Sam Green snapped the stretch with a three-pointer at the 5:19 mark, but after that, Drexel had just three points, on another Green three-pointer, the rest of the half. Green led the team with 11 points in the half. UMBC shot 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes and committed just three turnovers. Dimitrije Spasojevic scored 13 first-half points off the bench for the Retrievers.
Green finished the day 6-for-11 from the floor and had four three-pointers. Zach Walton was the only other Dragon in double figures with 13 points. The Dragons shot 43 percent from the floor overall. UMBC shot a blistering 63 percent over the final 20 minutes and finished the game at 57 percent. K.J. Jackson led UMBC with 19 points, while Daniel Akin added 18.
Drexel will head home where it will play its next two games at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Wednesday, Drexel will host Princeton at the conclusion of the Drexel women's game against Villanova. The Dragons will also be home on Saturday when La Salle comes to University City.
