Wynter’s Career-Best 31 Gives Men’s Basketball 82-76 Home Win over Princeton
12/4/2019 10:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – A career-high 31 points from sophomore guard Camren Wynter gave Drexel Men's Basketball the boost it needed in an 82-76 home win over Princeton on Wednesday night. Wynter and the rest of the Dragons were hyper-efficient in the victory. As a team, Drexel (5-4) shot 60 percent from the floor, and Wynter made 13 of his 16 attempts from the field. Drexel improved to 5-0 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center and defeated the Tigers (1-6) in the schools first meeting in seven years.
The Dragons opened the second half with a 15-5 run to extend their one-point lead to double digits. James Butler scored seven points during that stretch as the Dragons took the lead for good. Midway through the half, Princeton scored seven straight points of its own to cut the deficit to six at 61-55. The Dragons answered with nine unanswered points. Wynter had the first five points in the run and Zach Walton had the next four points. It appeared as if Drexel would cruise to the victory with an 11-point lead with just 1:41 to play, but the Tigers had other ideas. Princeton extended the game by fouling and attacking Drexel's basket right away with each possession. The Dragons didn't make it easy on themselves. After making eight of its first nine free throws in the game, Drexel missed the front end of three straight one-and-one opportunities as Princeton made it a one possession game with just 39 seconds to play. On the Tigers next possession which could have tied the game, Butler came up with a big block and the Dragons made three of their final four free throw attempts to pick up the win.
The first half was back and forth and featured an outstanding 20 minutes from Wynter. He was 7-for-9 shooting in the half and had 16 points and three assists by intermission. The Dragons also got an unexpected contribution off the bench from Tadas Kararinas. The junior who has played limited minutes this season was 3-for-3 from the floor and had seven points to provide a spark in Butler's absence.
Jaelin Llewellyn led Princeton with 28 points. He was 8-for-8 from the line and had four three-pointers. Tosan Evbuoman, Richmond Aririguzoh and Ryan Schwieger each added 10 points.
