PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel wrestling team (4-10, 1-5 EIWA) suffered a conference loss to the No. 13 Princeton Tigers (9-6, 5-1 EIWA) in a Friday evening EIWA dual from the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa. by a final of 27-13. Redshirt sophomore Parker Kropman secured the biggest win of the night for the Dragons at 149 pounds as he defeated No. 2-ranked Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton with a late third-period takedown.
The bout of the night for Drexel came at 149 pounds: winter transfer Kropman and No. 2-ranked Kolodzik. The duo stayed on their feet for the entirety of the first period as Kropman kept slipping from Kolodzik's grasp. Kropman went up 1-0 in the second with an escape and took a shot late but did not score as he held the one-point edge. In the third, Kolodzik evened it up with an escape. After a stalemate near the middle of the period, Kropman was hit with a stall warning. Still tied, Kropman turned the tides as he swiped Kolodzik's leg out from under him with under 10 seconds left on the edge of the mat before getting the two-point takedown as over 1,000 fans in the DAC went wild in the 3-1 decision.
Drexel got four wins on the night at 149 pounds, 165 pounds, 174 pounds and heavyweight but the Tigers were able to get the Dragons on their backs in three bouts, which made the different.
The match started with No. 14-ranked Joey Goodhart at heavyweight up against Princeton's Kendall Elfstrum. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania native got an early takedown in the first before riding Elfstrum out of the period. Starting down in the second, Goodhart went up 3-0 before tacking on his second takedown to push it to 5-0. Goodhart nearly turned Elfstrum on his back after securing his heel and eventually was awarded a stall point to go up 6-0 after two periods. Goodhart added six points in the third with 6:07 of riding time to win the 12-2 major decision. It came as Goodhart's team-best 27th win of the year and the 95th of his career. He is now 13-1 in duals and 6-0 in EIWA bouts in 2018-19.
But Princeton then went up 12-4 in the match after two pins at 125 and 133 pounds. The Tigers extended with a close 4-1 decision at 141 pounds as Drexel's Nick Widmann dropped the narrow affair to Princeton's Marshall Keller. After a scoreless first and just one escape for Princeton in the second, Widmann grabbed his only point with a third-period escape before Keller got a takedown and the riding time point to win.
Following Kropman's win at 149 and a 10-minute intermission, a pin at 157 pounds pushed Princeton's advantage up to 21-7. Sophomore Evan Barczak had faced Princeton's Quincy Monday earlier this year at the Franklin & Marshall Open. That bout ended in a close 6-4 decision in favor of Monday. On Friday, Monday was able to pin Barczak for just the second time this year in 31 matches for the Drexel sophomore.
Drexel junior Ebed Jarrell came in ranked as high as No. 15 in the polls and earned an 11-7 decision against Leonard Merkin. Trailing 6-3 in the second, Jarrell outscored Merkin 8-1 for the remainder of the bout for the win. Jarrell had two takedowns in the match and added a point for 1:52 of riding time. The junior is 19-2 on the year, 12-1 in duals and 5-0 in conference bouts.
Redshirt freshman Bryan McLaughlin suffered a narrow 5-3 decision at 174 pounds for the Dragons. Each wrestler had a takedown in the bout that were both reviewed. Princeton's takedown came late in the first period before McLaughlin's with 1:25 left in the second. McLaughlin added a late third-period escape but the riding time point led Princeton's Travis Stefanik to the two-point 5-3 win.
Freshman Anthony Walters picked up an 8-5 decision at 184 pounds over Princeton's Chase Piperato. The freshman had a takedown in each period as he got his second EIWA win of the year. After being poked in the eye early in the bout, he recovered for the win.
The night ended with the ranked matchup of No. 14 Stephen Loiseau and Princeton's No. 3 Patrick Brucki. The pair each had a takedown and escape in the first before Brucki added three points in the second with a reversal and illegal hold point. Bucki tacked on three takedowns in the third as Loiseau had four escapes in the bout. Brucki came out on top 13-6 as Princeton won the match overall, 27-13.
