JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville started the second half on an 8-1 run to break open a tie game and went on to defeat Drexel, 19-12, on Saturday in Florida. The Dragons fell to 1-3 on the season while the Dolphins (1-4) got into the win column for the first time. Marshal King had three goals and five points in the loss, while Matt Varian also scored three times.
The teams went into the second quarter tied at 4-4 after Ryan Genord set up King on the man-up with just 27 seconds left in the first. King ripped a shot into the top corner from 15 yards out. However, the Dolphins scored two straight to take the lead. After a Matt Varian goal cut the lead to 6-6, Jack Dolan started a 6-0 run with his first goal of the day. Dolan would add two more in the run which saw Jacksonville increase its lead to 12-5. Reid Bowering snapped the run with goal number 14 of the season, but Jimmy Hoffman added a pair for the Dolphins as the lead expanded to 14-7.
The Dragons tried to get back in the game, scoring the final two goals of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 16-9. Freshman Jack Mulcahy and King scored within a span of 1:16 to give Drexel some life. The teams exchanged goals early in the fourth quarter before the Dolphins pulled away for the win.
Jacksonville only outshot Drexel by two, but the Dolphins scored on 19 of their 38 shots. The Dolphins set the pace early, winning eight of the first 11 face-offs. They ended the day with a 19-14 advantage. Freshman Liam Muhly came off the bench to give Drexel a spark and won eight of his 13 draws in his first collegiate game. Turnovers continued to hurt the Dragons as the visitors made 18 miscues, 15 of those that were forced by aggressive Dolphins' defenders.
King picked up his fifth career hat trick and his third five-point game of his career. Varian finished the day with four points and now has scored at least one goal in 18 straight games. Mulcahy and Genord each had three-point games. Mulcahy picked up his second straight multi-goal game, while Genord had a goal and two assists.
Dolan had quite the day for the Dolphins, finishing with four goals and four assists. Evan Tyler and Dwayne Mattushik each had hat tricks. Hunter Sells, a Johns Hopkins transfer, made 10 saves in the cage for Jacksonville. John Roulston had five saves for DU.
Drexel will look to snap its two-game losing skid when it returns home to Philadelphia for a pair of games next weekend in the inaugural Philly 4 Lacrosse Classic. The Dragons play Saint Joseph's at 5 p.m. on Friday at Villanova prior to the Wildcats game against Penn. On Sunday afternoon, Vidas Field will be the host of the Classic. Drexel plays Villanova at noon with Penn and Saint Joseph's to follow.
