PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Drexel scored eight straight goals to break a 4-4 tie and went on to defeat Providence at Chapey Field. The Dragons held the Friars scoreless for more than 21 minutes on the way to improving their record to 4-4. Marshal King set career-highs with five goals and seven points to lead the Dragons. Nick Fox and Reid Bowering each scored three times as the Dragons wrapped up their non-conference schedule. Providence is now 3-5.
King had one of his best games in a Drexel uniform. He had at least one goal in every quarter and with his final goal of the contest, the senior recorded his 100th career point. King joins Bowering and Matt Varian, who each went over the 100-point mark last week at Georgetown, as current members of the team to reach that plateau.
Fox scored his first goal of the game with just 14 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game at four, and then put the Dragons ahead for good a minute and a half into the second period. Those two scores started the eight-goal run. The Dragons outscored the Friars, 6-0, in the second quarter and after a Jack Mulcahy goal early in the third quarter, held an 11-5 advantage. In the second quarter Bowering and King each scored a pair of goals for the Dragons. Fox and Collin Mailman had the others. Matt Varian handed out two assists during the run and finished with three assists in the game. The junior was held without a goal, snapping his 21-game goal scoring streak.
Providence tried to get back into the game and scored two straight after Mulchay's goal. However, the Dragons continued their solid offensive play by scoring three straight. King, Fox and Ryan Genord were the Drexel scorers in the run as DU took a commanding 14-6 lead with nine minutes to play in the game. The Friars scored three of the final four goals in the game as the Dragons were able to empty the bench and get a number of younger players some playing time in the fourth quarter.
Providence came into the game ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense. The 15 goals scored by the Dragons was the second most the Friars have allowed in 2019. On the other end of the field, Ross Blumenthal picked up his third win in four decisions in the cage for the Dragons. The first-year player had a big game, making 12 saves and allowing just eight goals before giving way to John Roulston late in the contest.
It was a high scoring first quarter at Chapey Field as each team scored four times. The Dragons had four different goal scorers in the first 15 minutes. Bowering, Cam Harris, King and Fox each found the back of the net for the Dragons. Brendan Kearns scored two in the first quarter for the Friars.
Mulcahy finished the day with a goals and two assists. Harris recorded a goal and assist for the Dragons. Tate Boyce, an All-American candidate in the cage, stopped 14 shots for the Friars. Matt Grillo, Kearns and Nick Hatzipetrakos each had two scores. Drexel outshot the Friars, 44-38, and had eight more ground balls than their host. Providence had a slight 15-13 edge on face-offs.
Drexel begins Colonial Athletic Association play next weekend. The Dragons visit UMass on Saturday at 1 p.m.
