HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 4-seeded Drexel University softball team (31-26-1) advanced in an elimination game at the 2019 CAA Softball Championships with a 2-1 win over the No. 3-seeded Towson Tigers (27-27) from Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va. on Wednesday night.
After dropping an afternoon game to No. 5-seeded Charleston, the Dragons moved to the loser's bracket with the loser of tonight's game getting eliminated from the conference tournament on the first day.
Though Towson led for most of the game, Drexel mounted a seventh-inning rally to win and advance to see action on Thursday. It comes as the first win in the CAA Tournament for the Dragons since DU moved to the CAA in 2002. Drexel had previously made the tournament in 2002 and 2005, going 0-2 both times.
Towson got its only run on Wednesday with a solo home run to leadoff the bottom of the second inning.
Drexel had three hits through six innings, each coming in different frames. The Dragons had runners on second and third in the fourth after a double from Kristi DiMeo but could not even the score, 1-0.
But in the seventh, Haley Hulitt singled to start the inning. Following two walks to load the bases, Elena Woulfe tied up the game with a sacrifice fly to center field. The ensuing batter, Hannah Walker, gave Drexel the lead with a bunt single, 2-1.
Brooklyn Daly (W, 17-8) pitched the complete game effort for Drexel, going 7.0 innings with three strikeouts, allowing just four hits and the one run via the solo homer.
