HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 4-seeded Drexel University softball team (32-27-1) saw its 2019 run at the CAA Championships come to an end on Thursday night with a 7-3 loss in the conference semifinals to the No. 2-seeded Elon Phoenix. The loss came as the second of the tournament for the Dragons, knocking them out while Elon advances to the championship series to face No. 1-seeded host James Madison.
Drexel picked up its first two ever wins at the CAA Championships on Wednesday and Thursday. Since joining the conference in 2002, the Dragons went 0-2 in both 2002 and 2005 before returning for a third time in 2019 after a long layoff. Drexel dropped the 2019 conference tournament opener to Charleston in 11 innings, 7-5, before eliminating Towson on Wednesday evening with a 2-1 victory. DU began Thursday with an 8-0 five-inning, run-rule afternoon win over Charleston before falling to the Phoenix in the evening, 7-3.
Drexel made a late push against Elon as the squad trailed 7-0 heading into the top of the seventh.
With just two hits coming into the final frame, the Dragons managed four in the seventh as they tallied three runs to avoid the shutout. Reilly Jo Swanson and Elena Woulfe started things off with back-to-back singles. After a flyout, Sarah Clinton mashed a double to left field to bring home Swanson. Linda Rush then continued her record-breaking season at the plate with a two-run double, 7-3.
The two RBI game pushed Rush to 80 runs batted in on the season, expanding on her Drexel and CAA single-season record. The double was also her 19th of the campaign, breaking teammate's Kristi DiMeo single-season mark of 18 set last year.
Elon scored early in the affair with a two-run home run from Megan White in the first following by a five-run second inning which featured another two-run homer off the bat of Rebecca Murray and a two-run single from Callie Horn.
Drexel used three pitchers in the loss. Brooklyn Daly took the loss, pitching just 1.0 innings following by Devon Grippe who tossed 0.2. Meghan Conroy closed out the game with 4.1 innings of shutout softball.
The Dragons went 32-27-1 on the year, their most wins in a season since 2001 (33-26-1).
