ATHENS, Ohio – The Drexel University field hockey team (0-1) dropped a nonconference contest on the road to the Ohio University Bobcats (1-0) on Friday afternoon from Athens, Ohio by a final of 4-2.

The Dragons scored the first two goals of the game, one in each the first and second quarters, but four unanswered goals by Ohio led to a loss for Drexel in the squad's season opener.

Sophomore Avery Powell started the scoring for DU 4:29 into the contest as senior Tess Bernheimer assisted on the play, 1-0.

Junior Katie Ronan added to Drexel's edge with her first goal of the year midway through the second quarter with 7:05 to play in the half, 2-0. Bernheimer, a 2019 CAA Preseason Team selection and the team's point leader a season ago, notched her second assist on of the afternoon on the play.

Drexel held a 2-0 lead at the break.

Ohio was able to cut the Dragons' lead in half with a goal from Kendall Ballard before Leah Warren tied it up late in the third quarter, 2-2.

Drexel sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Sokach earned the start in the cage and played the first, third and fourth quarters, making four saves. Freshman Megan Hadfield made her debut for the Dragons as a reserve goalkeeper in the second quarter, making two stops..

The Bobcats managed two more goals in the final 15 minutes to go on to win, 4-2. The third was off the stick of Katelyn Whittle with 9:29 remaining while Ballard scored off a penalty corner, her second of the game, in the final seconds.

Ohio led shots, 14-9, and shots on goal, 9-6. Penalty corners were fairly even with a slight edge favoring the Bobcats, 3-2.

Powell led Drexel with three shots, all on goal. Sophomore Puk Thewessen had two shot attempts on the day. Freshmen Amber Brouwer, Isabel Jacobs, Cailey Lever and Gabriella Martina all started in their first collegiate game.
