Field Hockey Drops Sunday Matinee in 2OT to Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Drexel University field hockey team (0-2) dropped its Sunday afternoon road matchup to the Indiana University Hoosiers (1-1) from Bloomington, Ind. by a final of 4-3 in double overtime.
Drexel picked up the first goal of the day before the teams traded goals to end regulation tied, 3-3. The Hoosiers then converted on a penalty corner in the second overtime to pick up the victory.
Drexel freshman Cailey Lever notched her first collegiate goal to put the Dragons on the board first.
The freshman scored midway through the first quarter, 7:03 into the game, on an assist from fellow Puk Thewessen, 1-0. The Hoosiers evened the scored about 19 minutes later with under four minutes to play in the half on an unassisted score by Mary Kate Kesler, 1-1.
Exactly one minute later with 2:48 to play in the second quarter, Powell scored her team-best second goal of the young season on an assist from senior Tess Horan to give the Dragons the lead at the break, 2-1.
Indiana led shots at halftime, 10-4, while Drexel sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Sokach made six stops in the opening half.
Indiana tied the game with 7:02 to play in the third quarter on another unassisted goal, this time by Kennedy Reardon, 2-2. Less than two minutes later an Indiana foul led to a penalty stroke for the Dragons, which Thewessen converted for her first goal of the season to put Drexel up, 3-2.
The final goal of regulation came closely thereafter as Indiana's Kessler scored for the second time, 3-3.
Drexel outshot Indiana, 4-3, in the final 15 minutes, but neither team could find the go-ahead goal as the game went into overtime.
With less than three minutes left in the second overtime period, a penalty corner by the Hoosiers led to a goal from Sheridan Weiss and an assist for Kelsey Giese to finish off the game, 4-3.
In total, Indiana led shots, 25-14, and penalty corners, 11-6.
Sokach started for Drexel in the cage, making six saves across 45 minutes. Freshman Megan Hadfield played the fourth quarter and both OT periods for a total of 32:32 minutes in relief, making two saves.

The Dragons return to action on the road on Friday, Sept. 6 against No. 17 Saint Joseph's at 4 p.m. Following that, Drexel has its home opener at Buckley Field against Rider on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
