PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (0-3) dropped a nonconference affair to the No. 17 Saint Joseph's University Hawks (2-0) on Friday afternoon from Ellen Ryan Field on SJU's campus by a final of 4-1.
The Dragons limited the Hawks to just half of their goal total from last year's matchup.
In the first half on Friday, St. Joe's scored one in the first quarter and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead as Drexel managed one shot off the stick of sophomore Puk Thewessen after the squad earned a pair of penalty corners.
Thewessen was given another opportunity midway through the third quarter and converted to cut down the Hawks' edge, 3-1. On the corner opportunity, junior Chandler McFeeley made a pass to Thewessen who was able to put it past the Hawks' two-time All-American goalkeeper Victoria Kammerinke.
Drexel held Saint Joseph's scoreless in the third quarter, breaking the Hawks' streak of six-straight quarters with a goal to start their season.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Hawks scored their fourth and final goal after Emily Peters batted down a rebounded save after DU starting freshman goalkeeper Megan Hadfield made two quick back-to-back stops, 4-1. Hadfield played all 60 minutes for Drexel and made five saves in her first collegiate start.
Shortly thereafter, with 13:20 to play, DU had another corner opportunity and tried out the same play that worked the first time with senior Tess Bernheimer inputting to fellow senior Katie Bagdon who set it up for McFeeley on the right side before passing back over to Thewessen. But the Dragons could not muster a shot in what would be their final scoring opportunity.
In total, SJU led shots, 13-9, and corners, 7-5.
