PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (0-4) dropped its home opener to the Rider Broncs (2-1) on Tuesday evening from Buckley Field in Philadelphia, Pa. by a final of 3-1.
The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak against the Broncs dating back to the 1996. The Dragons were 6-0 against Rider from 2012-18 and 4-0 from 1996-99 with no games played from 2000-2011.
Though Drexel managed three shots in the opening quarter on Tuesday, the Dragons found themselves trailing 6:10 into the affair after Rider's Carly Brosious took a close-range shot from near the goal line over a diving freshman Megan Hadfield, who started her second collegiate game in the cage for Drexel.
In the second quarter, the Broncs went up 2-0 after a scrum in front of the cage turned into a Rider goal for Julia Divorra while Brosious garnered the assist.
The Dragons had their chances in the second half with four of their seven penalty opportunities coming in the third quarter. While the squad managed five shots in that quarter, none found the back of the cage as the score remained 2-0.
With 5:17 to play in the final quarter, Drexel pulled its goalkeeper in favor of an extra position player. DU was able to maintain possession until a Rider breakaway led to a second goal for Brosious with 2:55 left in the contest as Kiki van Ommeren earned the assist.
In their seventh and final penalty corner, sophomore Puk Thewessen made a pass back to senior Tess Bernheimer near the left side of the cage for the Dragons' lone score. Bernheimer inserted on the corner and came away with her first goal of the season while Thewessen continued to lead Drexel with six points on the year, 3-1.
Drexel led shots, 12-7, and penalty corners, 7-2, while shots on target were even, 5-5.
