Field Hockey Dominates Bryant for 6-0 Home Win

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (1-4) picked up its first win of the season over the Bryant Bulldogs (0-5) from Buckley Field on Sunday afternoon by a 6-0 final.
The Dragons dominated possession, out shooting the Bulldogs 25-5 in the contest including 16-3 shots on goal. Drexel earned 15 penalty corners compared to Bryant's two to help cruise to the victory.
Sophomore Emily Owens notched her first goal of the season and the game midway through the first quarter, 1-0. Fellow sophomore Avery Powell made it 2-0 a few minutes later after she knocked in a pass from senior Tess Horan. The score came as Powell's third goal of the year.
A few minutes into the second quarter, freshman Cailey Lever scored her second goal of the campaign on an assist from Powell to make it 3-0 in favor of the Dragons. At halftime, with the score 3-0, Drexel led shots 16-4 and corners 8-1.
The final three goals for DU came off set penalty corner plays.
Sophomore Puk Thewessen scored two goals in the third quarter, both assisted by seniors Katie Bagdon and Tess Bernheimer on corner opportunities. Bernheimer inserted on both plays with Bagdon stopping and setting up the shot for Thewessen. The first came 2:15 into the quarter and the second came with 3:20 left.
The sixth and final goal was scored by Bagdon in the fourth quarter with assists from freshman Isabel Jacobs and Bernheimer. It came as Bagdon's first goal of 2019 and Jacobs' first collegiate point.
Thewessen now leads Drexel with 10 points behind a team-best four goals. Bernheimer's three-assist day brings her up to a team-high five on the season for seven points which is tied for second along with Powell.
Redshirt sophomore Alexis Sokach (W, 1-1) posted a shutout in the cage with three saves across 60 minutes of action.

The Dragons now play two games on the road on Friday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 22 at Monmouth and Temple, respectively.
