Women’s Soccer Pushes Hofstra Early, Falls to Defending Champs in Overtime, 2-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Drexel women's soccer went on the road to defending CAA tournament champion and preseason favorite Hofstra and led for nearly an hour before falling in overtime by a 2-1 score line on Thursday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.
An opportunistic finish from Melissa Lyon, resilient defending and the sure hands of Libby Baeza appeared to be the recipe for a tone-setting victory in the CAA opener for both teams.
Drexel (4-4-2, 0-1-0) scored with its only shot attempt in the first half and led the hosts for 53 minutes. In the fifth minute, Lauren Currey squared a ball back towards the middle of the 18-yard box to pick out Lyon, who converted the chance for her first goal of the season.
Lyons becomes the sixth different Dragon to score a goal this season. The owner of two assists as well, the junior from Perkasie, Pa. is now second on the team in total points.
The assist represents the 11th point this season for Currey and the 21st of her career. The sophomore entered into a two-way tie with Lauren Stollar (2012-15) for 15th on the all-time points list at Drexel.
With a goal in hand, the Dragons soaked up pressure for the rest of the half to go into the locker room up 1-0. Baeza made six saves in the opening period, including a pair of high-quality stops in the 11th minute, to keep the hosts off the board.
Baeza (3-3-1) made a total of nine stops on Thursday to enter into sole possession of 10th place on the all-time saves ledger at Drexel. The CAA's preseason goalkeeper of the year now has 123 career stops for the Dragons.
Hofstra (7-3-0, 1-0-0) equalized in the 58th minute following one of its nine corners of the night. Miri Taylor took the corner and delivered a dangerous ball to Brianna Doran, who deflected it off the near post and into the goal.
The Dragons had one opportunity to win the game at the death. Lyon received the ball in midfield and made a marauding run toward the Pride's box. However, Lyon could not bookend the match with her second tally, and Skylar Kuzmich made the save in the 87th minute to send the match to overtime.
Kuzmich (7-3-0) made one stop in a winning effort on Thursday night.
Hofstra wasted little time in finding the golden goal, scoring the game winner just 63 seconds into the extra period. Taylor completed her three-point outing with the winning marker with the assist going to Lucy Shepherd.
The Dragons clamped down on CAA Preseason Midfielder of the Year Lucy Porter, holding the conference's leading goal scorer and point getter to just one off-target shot.
Drexel goes for its first points of the CAA campaign this Sunday, when the Dragons host College of Charleston at 11:30 a.m. The Cougars knocked off Delaware, 1-0, on Thursday night in their conference opener.
