Men's Soccer Topped Again By 2-1 Margin
9/7/2019 8:23:00 PM | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – A familiar and unwelcome final score reared its ugly head again for the Drexel men's soccer team, as they dropped their third consecutive 2-1 decision to open the 2019 season. The Dragons pushed hard to overcome a 2-0 second half deficit, but could not break through after a Kwesi Allen penalty kick put them on the board.
Allen's PK came late in the 76th minute, his first goal of the season. He converted after the Huskies were called for one of their 13 fouls in a chippy game that saw each side draw a yellow card. Unfortunately, the Dragons' aggressive offensive push late could not find an equalizer as the one-goal deficit proved final.
All three goals in the game were scored in the second half, as Northeastern found the back of the net in the 52nd and 59th minutes. Both proved to be bad breaks for the Dragons. First, Dan Munch fired a rocket high that ricocheted off the crossbar, but before a Dragon could clear it out of the box, Jack Monte got a toe on it and sent it in from close range. Seven minutes later, it was Munch finishing after a long free kick from Bernardo Gracindo from near midfield bounded untouched into the box. Munch bodied it in to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
Drexel was outshot 15-11 on the evening, though both teams put up eight attempts in the second half. Laolu Daranijo led the team with four shots, all good looks that could not beat Northeastern keeper Noah Abrams.
The Dragons will now have their longest stretch of non-conference action of the season, with the next three games to be played against out-of-league foes. That starts with a visit to NJIT next Wednesday, Sept. 11. After a trip to Bucknell the following Saturday, Drexel will host George Mason on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.
