College of Charleston Rallies to Defeat Drexel, 73-68

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to defeat Drexel on Sunday afternoon at TD Arena, 73-68. Camren Wynter led three Dragons in double figures with 19 points. Drexel fell to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Brendan Tucker led Charleston (5-6, 3-1) with a career-high 35 points.
The Dragons appeared to be in good shape as they led 49-39 with just under 15 minutes to go in the contest. However, the Cougars got hot from the floor in a hurry. Charleston sank seven-straight shots at one point and went on a 16-0 run over a span of five minutes to take the lead at 55-49. Drexel remained within striking distance the rest of the way but would not take the lead again. Wynter nailed a three-pointer with 37 seconds to play to make it a one-possession game at 69-66. Charleston increased the lead when DeAngelo Epps made a lay-up with 28 ticks left on the clock. Drexel committed a turnover on the next possession, and the Cougars sealed the game with two free throws from Epps.
Drexel trailed by as many as eight points in the first half, but went on a huge run to take the lead. The Dragons scored 14-straight points and held the Cougars off the board for a span of more than six minutes to take the lead. The Dragons went to intermission up by 10 after T.J. Bickerstaff grabbed an offensive board and was fouled with under a second to go. He made both free throws, and Drexel led 39-29. The Dragons were 4-for-5 from deep in the half and shot 57 percent overall in the opening 20 minutes.
Wynter finished the day 6-for-12 from the floor and made a pair of threes. He is now shooting .472 from behind the arc and with his five assists, moved into eighth place on Drexel's career assist list with 384. Zach Walton added a season-high 17 points and drained three 3-pointers. James Butler had his second-straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Butler is now shooting just shy of 57 percent from the floor.
Tucker had a career-day for the Cougars. He missed just three shots on the afternoon and was 5-for-7 from deep. He was the only Cougar to score more than eight points. Charleston was on fire in the second half, shooting 62 percent. Overall, the Cougars shot 56 percent and committed just seven turnovers.
The Dragons were perfect from the line, making all 15 of their charity-stripe attempts. It was the third time since joining the CAA 20 years ago that a Drexel team made all of its free throw attempts (15 minimum).
Drexel returns home tonight and will be off until next weekend, The Dragons will face William & Mary at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday and Sunday. Both games will tip-off at 1 p.m.
