PHILADELPHIA - Drexel earned the first CAA win of the field hockey season in a 4-1 matchup with Towson University on Friday afternoon. The Dragons saw scores from four different athletes to improve to 4-7 on the season and 1-0 in CAA play.
Drexel sank three goals in the first quarter for the second time this year behind seven shots and two penalty corner opportunities. Eline Di Leva kicked off the scoring for DU with an unassisted effort at the 3:37 mark. The sophomore forward has recorded at least one goal through the last four games.
The Dragons forced back-to-back penalty corners in the ninth minute and found success on the second effort. Puk Thewessen fired a shot into the Tigers zone and found Emily Owens on the deflection giving the Dragons a 2-0 lead. Two minutes later, the duo of Gabby Martina and Tina Rawa gave Drexel the 3-0 advantage on a 2v1 effort for Rawa's second goal of her rookie season.
Towson found a score in the second quarter, but Drexel's defense powered through in the second half. The Dragons held the Tigers to only seven total shots on the day. Avery Powell added DU's final goal in the 32nd minute on a feed from Isabel Jacobs. With the goal, Powell and Di Leva lead the Dragons offense with five goals and four assists for 14 points apiece.
Drexel will complete its homestand on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup with Villanova at 12 p.m.
