CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Dragons defense held strong for much of Sunday's matchup with No. 16 Virginia, but the Cavaliers offense powered through to a 4-1 victory. The Dragons move to 5-13 overall and 2-3 in conference play heading into their final weekend of the regular season.
The Cavaliers offense took an early 1-0 lead on their first penalty corner of the day at the 3:20 mark. UVA outshot the Dragons in the first half, allowing them to open the gap to 2-0 two minutes before the buzzer.
After providing the Dragons only goal in Friday's matchup with JMU, Puk Thewessen led the Dragons offense once again. The senior back took advantage of Drexel's corner opportunity at 34:21, sinking her fifth goal of the season on an assist from Emily Owens and Isabel Jacobs. With her fifth goal, Thewessen ties Avery Powell for the second highest leading scorer on the team, one behind Eline Di Leva (6).
Despite a strong performance by Megan Hadfield in net, the Cavaliers offense continued to fire away for two more goals in the fourth. Hadfield closed out the day with 15 saves, one short of her career-high set against UNC on Sept. 12.
The Dragons will close out the regular season next weekend with a pair of home contests against Delaware and Bucknell.
